And the winner is …

During the conference the delegation competed for the first ever green conference award. At half time Germany and Italy were head to head. The hosts were trying hard to secure the award for themselves. Did they make it? – No, they didn’t. In the end they had to let Italy take the win. Congratulations.

The work of the 14th European guide and scout conference is done. Now it is time to ring the bell to mark the start of the celebrations. Craig Turpie, the former president of the European Scout committee and Gerrit Beyer, member of the conference organizing team, take the honours. In the background Lara Tonna, former chair for WAGGGS Europe, is ready to party, too.

Motions, Resolutions and Speeches – the final day of the 14th European Guiding and Scouting conference

The last day of the conferences found the delegates from WAGGGS discussing their motions and WOSM working on their resolutions. Topics like membership development, budget, the partnership between the two organizations and European youth issues were just a few of the many which were on the agenda. Going through the amendments, stating the national organizations’ point of view and coming to an agreement is always a very intense process. But the final vote for or against any of the recommendations takes scouting and guiding in Europe a step forward.

Before the two separate conferences were closed the current chairs said their good byes and gave their thanks to the committees and conferences. At the same time the newly named chairs took the opportunity to address the delegates. The change-over from the current committees was the final procedure of this year’s conferences.

In the afternoon WAGGS and WOSM tackled their common recommendations in the final joint conference. They also voted on the application from Norway to host the next European guide and scout conference in 2016. The announcement that the conference had voted in favor of the Norwegian scouts and guides caused a big round of applause. Now Norway will get busy to make the European delegations feel at home in three years’ time.

In their closing speech Lara Tonna and Craig Turpie, the two retiring chairs of WAGGGS and WOSM Europe, addressed the delegates one more time before their term of office came to an end. Together they thanked the guides and scouts of the conference for the trust they had received and wished all national organizations good luck for their future involvement in European guiding and scouting.

Confusion spread when the two former chairs closed the conference at the end of their speech. In their own unique way they smiled this situation away and reopened the conference to let Corinna Hauri (WAGGGS) and Andrea Demarmels (WOSM), the two new chairs, take over.

In an amusing introduction the new chairs pointed out that although they are both Swiss they are very different personalities indeed. This was to assure the conference that they are aware of the concerns that WAGGGS as well as WOSM Europe will be chaired by two Swiss.

Both, Corinna as well as Andrea, are looking forward to working together and the same stands for the new committees. The shared believe that the partnership of WOSM and WAGGGS will be beneficial to all working in scouting and guiding in Europe will take them into the new triennium.
